National Pacific Islander Education Network (NPIEN)

• Schools are required to have a School Safety Plan and take time to review their plan with the entire school community: Students, Staff, families
• Schools should have a School Safety Committee consisting of Students, Staff and parents that meets regularly and reviews the School Safety Procedures
• Review the list of items and ask if the school has sufficient items, and if everyone know where they are located and how to use, implement them
• Discuss how the items are funded
• Invite Directors of Student Support Services from the school district office to provide more information and resources

Emergency Kits: Where are they located? Are they first aid kits?

Food and water: How much is needed to support the school community, what types of foods are needed, and where are the items stored?

Clipboard: Who uses these? What is placed on them?

Traffic and parking cones: How are these used?

Bags and backpacks: For supplies for each class

Megaphones: Who will use these? For what purpose?

Vests: For Staff? Teachers? Student leaders?

Whistles: For who? How many?

Signage about school rules and procedures: For emergencies? What about daily rules? What else?

Incentives for outstanding or improved behavior and attendance: What incentives are provided at the school for students with outstanding, or improved bevaipr and attendance? Is this information posted?

Mindfulness activities: What regular activities take place to promote good mental health? Who do students and staff see if they are in need of support?

Masks to prevent illness: Are masks available, especially in times where widespread illnesses occur? Does everyone know where to find them?

Emergency lighting: How will individuals see should the lights not work?

PBIS activities: What activities take place at the school to support Positive Behavior, Interventions and Supports or similar programs?

Support for after-school programs: Are students in after-school programs aware of the School Safety Plan and procedures?

Other: What other ideas does the Committee have to improve School Safety? Discuss emergency drills and other ways to prepare for an emergency.

The National Safe Schools Conference is an event sponsored by NPIEN that provides additional information. It is held in July annually. Presenters are from education, law enforcement, mental health, and emergency responders.
